Ms. Minemura’s paintings are realistic. In the portrait of the late Toru Sunouchi, the artist’s brushwork is bold and uninhibited, but the vividness of the painting makes even me, who has never met Mr. Sunouchi, think that this is the kind of person he must have been. If you look closely, you can see that the position of the eyes and the way the nose is drawn are dynamic, but the artist has depicted a form of a person, rather than an easy “character.” Whether it is a flower or a female figure, I can viscerally feel the breath of the artist as she painted, as well as, her own energy, coming through the decades-old canvas.
